Formally speaking, the text we publish here is a translation of an essay written by Ivo De Gennaro, conducted by Daniel Zaruba, Thomas O’Halloran Jr. and Jack Krasuski. In truth, however, it is not a translation in the ordinary understanding of this word, nor is it simply “more” than a translation; rather, it is an attempt, conducted in English, to say the same as that which another essay attempts to indicate in German. When an attempt responds to another attempt in this manner, the common distinction between “original” and “translation” becomes obsolete, just like “authors” and “translators” are in the same way creators of a “source text”.
