Reading ⎪ Leibniz’s metaphysical position

This text is an extract from Ivo De Gennaro’s book Principles of Philosophy. A Phenomenological Approach.

It presents Leibniz’s thought as an exemplary metaphysical position of modernity. The theoretical core of this thinking – the principle of sufficient reason – is at the same time the source of the Leibnizian ethos, “the original (harmonic) economy of the world”.

The circumstance that this world is necessarily “the best of all possible worlds” has nothing to do with optimism, but sheds a light on today’s dominant drive towards optimization.
